Why is my lava lamp cloudy?
A lava lamp turns cloudy when it is shaken, moved or knocked over while warm: the soft wax breaks up and hangs in the liquid. Switch it off and leave it alone for 24 hours before you run it again.
Do not shake the lamp while the product is warm.
Direct sunlight is a separate problem. It does not cloud the liquid, it fades the colors, so keep the lamp off a sunny windowsill.

How do you fix a cloudy lava lamp?
Rest the lamp for 8 hours, warm it until the wax softens, let it cool, then run it for 8 to 10 hours. That four-step cycle clears most lamps that were moved while warm.
After it cools, turn the lamp on again and let it run for eight to 10 hours. This should result in clear liquid.
Do not open the globe, add water or heat the lamp with anything but its own bulb. A lamp that was shaken hard while fully hot may stay cloudy for good.

| Step | Time | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Rest | 8 hours | Leave the lamp off at room temperature so the wax settles |
| 2. Soften | Until the wax starts to soften | Switch it on, watch the wax, then switch it off |
| 3. Cool | 2 to 3 hours | Let the lamp cool completely |
| 4. Run | 8 to 10 hours | Switch it on and leave it alone for one long run |
Why is my lava lamp not flowing?
Most often the metal coil inside the globe is not lying flat on the bottom, so the heat does not reach the wax evenly. With the lamp off and cool, twirl the globe gently and the coil drops into place. Then give the lamp its usual 2 to 3 hours.
If this coil isn’t nestled at the bottom of the lamp, it may take longer for the lava to flow properly.
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Wax sits in one lump after 3 hours | The coil is not flat on the bottom of the globe | With the lamp off and cool, twirl the globe gently until the coil drops into place |
| A tall column that never breaks | The room is cold | Move the lamp away from an air conditioner or a window: it wants 68 to 75°F |
| Tower-like pillars on a new lamp | Normal on the first run | Let it run for 2 to 6 hours the first time |
| No light at all | The bulb is loose or has burned out | Tighten the bulb, or fit a new one of the same wattage |

Let the lamp cool fully before you handle it. Never open the globe: the seal is part of the lamp.
